I have done quite a bit of meteor-burst communication on two meters and one does not need 12 to 24 hours to complete a contact. An excellent starting point for information on amateur radio experimentation in "this area is the ARRL book called something like "Beyond Line of Sight". There are alot of articles about maximizing success during showers. I have had good results scheduling stations in the 900-1200 mile range. This pre- arrangement is usually done on 75 meters, 3818 and 3843, before and during the showers. I have made good two-way contacts in as little as one or two minutes, and have also heard nothing for an entire half hour of schedules. During any shower there is usually a peak when one can get on and call short CQ's and raise people, especially if one stays off 144.2. I have had about ten people call at once at times. This effect is also noticeable on 10, 15, 20 and 6 meters, anywhere where the signal is lower than the burst that it may recieve from the meteor enhancement.
